SPOTLIGHT BOOK

SPOTLIGHT BOOK

ALL of the books on this list have been read by myself personally, and I've put my reaction to it next to the book itself.
I do not believe you should recommend something unless you have tried it yourself. Of course, some of these books I liked more than others, and I try to give as objective an opinion on each work as I can so that you know what you're getting. Of course, all of these are sold via amazon.com, and so you always have the security of working with the very best as well.
A fascinating recounting of the history of physics. Watch as the modern concepts of motion, intertia and gravity come into being as the most brilliant minds of all time struggle to explain observed phenomena, and how their setting and even the church all play a role to bring us to where we are today.
What can the Queen of England in 1558 teach us about modern business? LOTS! She had to contend with hostile neighbors, an uncertian environment in her own nation, political rivals, economic problems, production problems and more. And while doing these things with grace she turned a backwater nation into the worlds super power of the day.

POLITICS

A fascinating recounting of the history of physics. Watch as the modern concepts of motion, intertia and gravity come into being as the most brilliant minds of all time struggle to explain observed phenomena, and how their setting and even the church all play a role to bring us to where we are today.
Read this and be armed to discuss politics on a whole new level. This is not an easy reading book, but it imparts the wisdom of the evils of socialism in irrefutable ways. It's very thought provoking, and even though written decades ago is still applicable today.
A little light, and serious, reading about legal and fun civil disobeiance type activities you can use the frustrate the big brother government. Of course, who knows how long such things will remain legal, so use at your own peril.
Get the facts for yourself. It's not as difficult as I thought it would be, and it covers all the bases. Forget about stupid conspiracy theories and so on, and just get the straight facts on how some deranged terrorist kicked off world war III.
I had trouble putting this book down. I also found myself saying "that's right" many times. The information is very damaging and the sources credible. The conclusions are inescapable and it's high time you can put some substance behind the accusations.
This is a very practical, nuts and bolts, read on how to conduct an election. Anyone can understand it and put the ideas to use right away. I'd recommend it for any aspiring politician.
This is actually a series of essays and other works in one volume and it highlights the moral ideal which is capitalism. None can effectively refute the well thought out conclusions drawn by Ann Rand.
Another nuts and bolts of political campaigning books, and well worth the effort. It's easy to read, easy to understand and will help you jump start your political ambitions with sound advice.

HISTORY

Technology can be used for good or evil, and many think that government control equates to evil. Read the story of how a disconnected band of technology pioneers wrestled control of privacy techniques from the government. It is fascinating how the story plays out on an international stage.
Hitler may have murderd most of Europe's jewish population, but he was unable to get the ones in Bulgaria because the King worked against him. Put yourself in a WWII setting and then risk opposing Hitler, and then read the book and you'll never be the same.
Read the chronicles of one year, the pivotal year, of the American revolution. An unlikley hero, George Washington, leads through victory and defeat, and just as the sands of time run out on him, pulls off the coup of the millimium. It will change your perspective on the war for indepenance.
Daughter of a man who killed her mother, and queen of a nation in serious trouble, the story of Queen Elizabeth I will inspire you in ways you might not have imagined. She faced troubles all around and yet drove her nation to prosperity far surpassing all other nations of the day.

RELIGION

Need I say more?
Part of my personal journey. It effectively lays out the case for Orthodoxy and answers most protestants questions. Thus, for me, it was critical.
Having knowns the author personally I found the work inspirational. I don't know if the personal contact makes much difference or not. It is part biography so expect a very personal journey.

POKER

Not an easy reading book, but a must if you want to really know the whole theoretical underpinnings of how to play winning poker. You'll learn more in an afternoon reading this than years playing the game. So do both.
A fun little book on some approaches to take when playing online. Very practical for the serious player who likes to win more than he loses.

BUSINESS

Lots of great little ideas in here. Ones you can use in your own company right now. Most are form the best business minds of the day.
Getting good people is a strategic edge every business needs. Hiring the wrong people only costs you in the long run. This book will give you a solid approach to your hiring process.
What can the Queen of England in 1558 teach us about modern business? LOTS! She had to contend with hostile neighbors, an uncertian environment in her own nation, political rivals, economic problems, production problems and more. And while doing these things with grace she turned a backwater nation into the worlds super power of the day.
I don't know why I read this book, but I did. And it's been useful in the most interesting places I never expected. It's well writte, in almost a tutorial style.

COMPUTER

Like the title suggests, this is a good book for beginners. It lays out the HOW of doing UML that is often lost in the thicker tombs available.

FICTION

It's Tom Clancy already! Engaging from start to finish, and full of excellent research that makes you worry it might be a documentary and not a fiction book.
Your basic dooms day book. I picked it up while flying somewhere I've since forgotten. It did not break any new ground for me, but was good for a pass the time type of book.
Sims has a few unexpected twists at the end, and one very much expected revelation. The government run amok with genetic manipulation in a dark future story with a more or less happy ending. Standard sci-fi fare.
I must be a sucker for submarine stories. Almost as good as The Hunt for Red October, and with some other twists I didn't expect. What can I say? Sub captians are a special breed of hero, and this book lives up to that.
I read this as a teenager, and liked it so much I bought it again to read it again. It's a love story really, and with time travel and guns, what's not to like?
It's not a mistake that this book sets the bar for Objectivism. Rand explains the moral basis for objectivism in a fictional story thats both fun and seriously thought provoking. I'm not sure a movie could be made, but God I wish.

MISCELLANEOUS

No point beating around the bush. An egg head like me needs some pointers when it comes to keeping his special girl happy in the romance department. This book will help anyone (male or female) who wants to know how to be romantic. Just reading it will show you how to come up with your own ideas.
No, this book isn't funny. But it will help anyone understand how to be funny. I still don't have a comedy career, but I blame me and not the book. After reading it I realized it was not my thing. So the book is probably great because it departs enough information to make decisions with.
